Journalist and historian Geert Mak (1946) succeeds in making Europe a readable, recognizable and rememberable project for all readers and viewers. Mak studies law and sociology at the Vrije Universiteit and Universiteit van Amsterdam, worked in Parliament as an assistant to the Pacifisch Socialistische Partij, taught constitutional and immigration law at the University Utrecht, and was a contributor to the magazine Groene Amsterdammer, broadcaster VPRO and newspaper NRC Handelsblad. He wrote several best selling books, such as De eeuw van mijn vader (My father’s century), Hoe God verdween uit Jorwerd, and In Europa. For the latter, he received several awards and sold over 350.000 copies. It is translated into 12 languages and was the backbone of a 2008 35-piece broadcast series on Dutch TV.
